Google makes us wonder can you solve fashion with math

If you’ve visited the fashion-loving part of the internet at all in the past week, then you’ve undoubtedly heard of Google’s new fashion venture, Boutiques.com. As the name would indicate, the site’s intent is to gather fashion from around the web together in one easily shopable place that allows celebrities, designers, replica watches, fashion people and anyone else who might have some spare time to create their own “boutique” that is tailored to their personal style and preferences.

Google is one of the most successful companies on the face of the planet, period, so I had high hopes that its nerds would come up with some sort of magic algorithm to recommend great things to me after I filled out the site’s length style questionnaire. But other than successfully banishing all brown from my results, the site’s recommendations were middling at best: my first round of options yielded items as seemingly random as a red silk Alexander McQueen gown, a pair of white tennis shoes and a $50 pleather purse. Not only are none of those options relevant to my shopping life, but the McQueen dress was the only thing I’d be caught anywhere near. Can Google really create an algorithm that replicates personal style?

I’ve always been of the belief that some people are fashion people and some people aren’t for a very simple reason: taste and style are intuitive and irrational. Somewhere deep in my right brain lies a section that starts to hum and whir and light up like Christmas when I see a piece of clothing that I love, and it has done so since I was in preschool. I struggle daily with the task of accurately articulating why it is that I like something, and it requires much more than the satisfaction of a few key characteristics for a piece to gain my favor. Or at least I think it does; Google’s betting that I’m wrong. I was more than willing to take the bet and set up an account.

The process of setting up a boutique and teaching Google’s software what you like is time-intensive, to say the least. Before the initial questions about your shape, pattern and color preferences, you’re taken through a series of pictures and asked to pick which outfits best reflect your personal style. Based on that, Google thinks I’m “edgy,” which apparently means I like black and Alexander Wang. I didn’t need a questionare to figure that out, but at least the website was accurate thus far. Although the time spent getting to that conclusion seemed unnecessary – I have the opportunity to sit around and diddle a stupid fashion website for hours because it’s ostensibly work-related, but how many people out there with real jobs (let alone kids to raise) want to spend their time teaching Google about their favorite brands, and then have those obvious conclusions parroted back at them like the information is somehow novel or revelatory?

The process’s second part involved telling Boutiques.com what shapes, uboat watches, colors and patterns I prefer. Despite my philosophical problems with choosing types of dresses that I “love” and “hate” (I love anything that’s designed correctly and tailored perfectly), I’ll admit that I have shapes toward which I tend to gravitate – tunics, skinny pants, booties, maxi dresses. The same goes for colors, and with as much information as I gave the website before it even showed me any clothes, buy rolex replica watch, I was hopeful that the picks would be good and that maybe I’d even find something I loved that I hadn’t seen before.

Soon, though, my hopes were dashed. As it turned out, telling Google that I liked black and high heels not only didn’t turn up a particularly good crop of shoes fitting that description, but it also turned up almost as many results that had seemingly nought to do with my stated preferences. And once the suggestions appear, you’re still not done. Next, you’re tasked with rating the items based on price, appearance and brand, which then helps tailor your future results to your taste. The only information you’re given on which to make your rating is a single picture and the item’s price. Most results also include a brand name, but enough lacked that key piece of information for it to be noticeable and annoying.

But even if you slog your way through all the choosing and voting and rating that has to be done for your results to improve (which they eventually do, although not as much as I would have liked), is this system really a superior way to shop than browsing categories at large online retailers like Net-a-Porter or Saks? The visual presentation and art direction aren’t even average when compared to most of the high-end shopping sites on the Internet, and instead of offering a well-edited collection of interesting, relevant pieces, Google wants you to do all the editing. And if you already have a strong sense of what you like and dislike, as the website requires in order to work correctly, then wouldn’t it be easier just to cut out the Boutiques.com middleman altogether?

With other luxury aggregators available to those who’d like to look for an item quickly or browse items across several platforms, I don’t see any particular advantage to using Boutiques.com over sites like ShopStyle, which provides a more straightforward approach to trawling the internet for particular types of products. Instead of trying to predict your taste, ShopStyle just lets you choose your parameters for any given search, which seems like a more logical way to tackle the ever-mercurial clothing tastes of the shopping public. The black shoe I love today might not have anything to do with the black shoe I want in a month, but if I’ve already trained Google to give results based on that first shoe, where does that leave my Boutiques.com account when I’m on to the next thing?

The specter that Google could eventually cast over fashion on the Internet is daunting to say the least, and when the company sets its mind to something, failure is not usually an option. What worries me, though, is that this entire venture might be based on a false premise. Many things about human behavior are predictable, but as far as tastes and trends go, fashion does a formidable job of keeping rationality at bay. But maybe that’s just the surface, and the things that we love really do fall on some sort of linear path. Do you think that Google’s engineers can accurately predict what color sweater you’ll want to buy next winter?

Jimmy Choo Embossed Rikki Shoulder Bag

I was looking back at some of the bags I’ve been covering lately and it seems like most of them are rather structured and classic in nature. So, no wonder I’ve spent much of my day thus far drooling over bags that have more of an edgy feel to them. Case in point, this Jimmy Choo Bag.

As soon as I started looking at this bag, I was taken back to the last time I was in a Jimmy Choo store and how many fabulous edgy bags they have. It is always great to find a bag that makes a name for itself before you even know what name is on the label.

Again, coming across this bag I had to tip my hat to Jimmy Choo. Starting with the color scheme, the Jimmy Choo Embossed Rikki Shoulder Bag would really add a great hint of color and style to even the most basic outfit. While the bag comes in either purple or brown snake-embossed leather they both serve a purpose. For that splash of color go for the purple and for that go-to bag, go for the brown.

I know there are plenty of you out there who are very anti-embossing, but Jimmy Choo has perfected this technique. This being the case, rolex gmt replica, no matter what side you are on, I’d encourage you to think twice. Along with the embossed leather, this bag has watersnake trim,Submariner replica, silver hardware, a flap top with push-lock closure and belted detail. The camel suede lining will look good with either the purple or brown leather and the size is great (9″H x 13 3/4″W, 8 1/2″ shoulder straps drop). Bottom line, this bag is great and I’d love it to be mine, breitling watches! Buy through Bergdorf Goodman for $1850.

BaselWorld 2009 TAG Heuer Monaco 40th Anniversary

Apr
03

One of the big bummers of the BaselWorld 2009 show was that I was unable to take a closer look at TAG Heuer’s new watches. The gigantic booth had this display in front of it, with both the old Monaco (1133) (it was the actual watch that Steve McQueen wore in Le Mans) and the new 40th anniversary Monaco.

The girl (a rented promo model with a cool leather TAG Heuer ‘Gulf’ jacket) couldn’t allow us to go inside the booth to make some decent pictures and she was also told NOT to give any press kits to the press (I had a press card via Perpetuelle).

I wonder if that’s really the policy, since TAG Heuer at least floods my mailbox with ALL of their new releases and celebrity news. Anyway, since there was no oppurtunity to take a decent shot of the wristwatch, I can only offer you the official TAG Heuer press photo.

The re-edition looks quite nice, and TAG Heuer finally understood that they should have the winding crown on the left side. Like the original. Now for the poor stuff… the watch has ‘in tribute to Steve McQueen’ engraved on the backside. I think most of us know that Steve McQueen wore a Rolex Submariner most of the time, wrist watch, and that he only used this watch (and appearantly returned it afterwards) for the Le Mans movie.

Anyway, TAG Heuer is probably aware of this and decided to make only 1000 pieces of them. The price, cheap wholesale designer handbags, is approx 6000 Euro. There is nothing wrong with a nice TAG Heuer watch, but 6K seems a bit too optimistic. The vintage Monaco ref.1133 is a nicer buy in my opinion, it is at least the real deal (if you are a Steve McQueen / LeMans fan) and can be found between 4250 euro and 5900 Euro currently (on Chrono24), with orginal box and bracelet.

Again, there is nothing much wrong with the watch itself, only the chronograph pushers are different when you give the watch a first glance, but the price and the engraving would make me buy Das Original!

Now, how can I remove myself from their mailing list…

Linde Werdelin's blog The Lab

Jun
08

As I wrote in my WorldTempus article last week, Linde Werdelin is one of the few brands that actually listens to its clientele. And even better, they want to give the LW enthusiasts some insight in the things that happen over at this watch company with Danish roots. One of the founders of Linde Werdelin, Morten Linde, is the editor of The Lab blog.?Ǭ This blog enables you to read about what’s happening behind-the-scene of a watch manufacturer. New product ideas, improvements and even the testing of their watches and instruments. You can provide LW some input by commenting on the posts, like you can here at FratelloWatches, cheap designer wholesale handbags!

On the left you’ll see Morten Linde (standing) and on the right (sitting) is Jorn Werdelin, with whom I had the pleasure to meet a few times. After all these posts here at FW, it goes without saying that I am really impressed by this brand. This initiative, The Lab, is just again one of the reasons that I like this brand so much.

As Morten Werdelin puts it in his own words:

?Ǩ?I wanted to establish a direct window of communication between the brand, my creations and those who love the watch industry and like Linde Werdelin watches. There is nothing more satisfying for a designer than to get immediate feedback on his/her thoughts from the person who is ultimately buying those creations. With The Lab, the end consumer is being offered a front seat to observe and interact with the LW universe,?Ǩ says Morten Linde.

For instance, you are being kept up to date on the progress of the development of their new models, such as the Oktopus. If you have some feedback to give on that, don’t hesitate to use the comments option on The Lab.

I think this is unique for a watch manufacturer. Just as unique as their offer to go and try one of their watches and instruments for five days at no cost or obligation (go here for detailed information).

These are the kind of things that makes it worthwhile for you as a watch aficionado, to check them out! As I have written many times now, their watches are not only unique in terms of design, look & feel, watches online, but also for their pro-active marketing strategy. This includes actual listening to their (potential) customers.

After having seen their new collection during the BaselWorld 2009 show, having talked/mailed with some of their staff about their watches, ideas on (e-)marketing and handled some of their watches a few times in the flesh, I ordered a LW 3-Timer (brown dial) myself and I can’t say I have been more excited with any other watch I purchased so far. The pictures of the brown dial version on The Lab help me to get through the waiting time

A New CEO For Rolex (Again)

May,daytona replica
04

In December 2008, I notified you that the Heiniger-era of Rolex ended with the resignation of Patrick Heiniger after being CEO for 16 years. Before that, his father Andre Heiniger lead the most famous watch firm from Geneva since 1963. From December 2008 till today, Bruno Meier lead Rolex into the twenty-tens. Evil sources assumed the resignation of Patrick Heiniger had something to do with ‘Bernie’ Maddof’s scandal, but was never confirmed.

Today, I tell you that Bruno Meier is already being replaced by a new CEO. Former head of Rolex Italy Gian Riccardo Marini (64) has been appointed as Rolex’s new CEO. Gian Riccardo Marini had been managing Rolex Italy since 2000 and is now ready for the next step. Although I wonder why Bruno Meier is resigning this soon, cheap leather handbags wholesale, I wish Gian Riccardo Marini all the best and hopefully bring us many more wonderful (new) watches from Geneva. And in my humble and personal opinion, it does sound good that Rolex is now being lead by an Italian guy. Italians know about Rolex

Oris TT3 Chronograph Review

Jun
07

When I started ‘collecting’ wrist watches, I never considered Oris as a serious option. They made nice mechanical watches, had nice designs, but brands that ‘do’ doubl?ɬ or plaque gold cases were off-limit. I also wasn’t very convinced about the quality of the watches.

Perhaps I didn’t do Oris any justice, because afterall, this brand exists since 1904 and have this ‘only mechanical movements’ philosophy. Anyway, I skipped Oris and rather went with brands like Omega (when they were still very affordable).

Since a few years, you can’t deny the fact that Oris upscaled in terms of quality and image. Their collection became a bit more ‘of this time’ and became a serious ‘entry-level’ watch, where – perhaps a bold statement – Omega stood before with their 1500 Euro Seamaster or Speedmaster Automatics (Reduced), there is now Oris. Omega up scaled, ruling out some of their previous client?ɬle, and now they can go Oris if they want. At least, that’s how I see it in a nutshell.

Oris gained a lot of respect amongst watch collectors and aficionados that are looking for a decent sports watch, for a fair price. Popular Oris watches are their divers watches and chronograph watches. Oris connected their name to the F1 Williams team since a few years and this partnership really bumped their chronograph collection to a new level. The Oris TT3 Chronograph is the watch I selected over at Ace Jewelers to have a closer look at.

This Oris TT3 Chronograph is massive! The watch measures 42.5mm in diameter, which is as big as the IWC Ingenieur 3227-01 or the IWC Portuguese Automatic. The case is made out of titanium and is black plated, which gives it this ‘stealth but still aggressive’-look. The pushers and crown are stainless steel and rose gold plated. I wonder why they still use the plated gold stuff, it looks good, but I wonder if it keeps looking that way. Time will tell and I assume that Oris has thought this over.

The dial of the watch is simply stunning, rolex replica watch wholesale, this is very hard to capture in a picture (as always). Through its sapphire AR coated crystal, you’ll see the black carbon fibre dial with its rose gold Arabic numerals and Super Luminova dots and filled hands for luming up in the dark. The date window on a chronograph to me is almost a no go, but Oris managed it to have it placed in such away, that it isn’t disturbing when reading the time or chronograph hands. It doesn’t bother at all.

Having Oris compared to the former Omega Speedmaster Automatic Reduced, I need to give you some more arguments I guess Oris uses a Oris caliber 674 movement, which is based on the famous ETA (Valjoux) 7750 movement. This movement, in contrast to the movement used by the Speedmaster Reduced, is a true chronograph movement. The movement used by the Speedmaster Reduced was a piggy backing movement. This means that it was a regular (ETA) movement, that could display hours, minutes and seconds, but was completed with a Dubois-Depraz module on top for the chronograph functionality. You can easily identify the use of such modular constructions by the position of the pushers and the winding crown.

When all operating devices are aligned perfectly, it is a true chronograph movement. When they are not, as with the Speedy Reduced, it is a piggy backing movement. The pushers are aligned a bit higher than the crown, when seen from the side (laying on the caseback). I don’t have to tell you that I am in favour of true chronograph movements, watch hublot, even if it was only for the location of the pushers and crown. Not only Omega, but a lot of brands used (and some of them still use) the piggy backing construction. However, Oris don’t.

The rotor of Oris’s mechanical watches are red, this is even a registered trademark by Oris. Although I don’t fancy a display back myself anymore (I got a bit tired of them), I can imagine that a lot of people do like them.

The Oris TT3 Chronograph comes on a rubber strap and a folding buckle. The stainless steel rose gold PVD plated folding clasp works perfectly, no parts sticking into the backside of your wrist (as some do) and the rubber strap makes it a very comfortable watch to wear. Despite the size!

My verdict on this watch is that Oris makes a great, original and modern looking chronograph for a decent price. The list price of this watch is 2.200 Euro. With a bit of bargaining, you will own a fancy looking sports watch that doesn’t make you look funny on a GetToGether for serious watch freaks. The only big con I can come up with is the use of plated gold, perhaps it isn’t even justified saying so, because it is just gut feeling, but I really prefer either stainless steel (PVD’ed or not) or solid gold/platinum. I am also no fan of display backs on fairly common movements, but I can imagine I am in the minority here.

Thanks to AceJewelers for providing the Oris watch and Dimer for making the photos of the TT3.

Last week, I had the chance to try the new green version of the Linde Werdelin 3-Timer. I wore this prototype for a day or so and made some pictures, which I want to share with you here at Fratellowatches. The green is really cool, especially when the light hits it. When you are inside or when it is cloudy, women handbags wholesale, the dial becomes very dark – almost black. The slightest sun ray will brighten the dial and the green engraved numerals on the bezel. More detailed information on this green LW 3-Timer can be found here.

On the last picture you can see my personal brown edition of the 3-Timer and the new green 3-Timer next to each other.

RUBBER B – a company located in Miami, Florida – introduced vulcanized rubber straps for a number of Rolex sports models. Their rubber straps will fit seamlessley to your Rolex Oyster case and the original Rolex clasp of the Oyster bracelet will fit without a problem. The Real Source Of Inspiration For The Vintage IWC Ingenieur

Jun,replica rolex submariner
17

About two weeks ago, I spoke to Dimer (friend of the show and eCommerce Manager at AceJewelers) and he showed me his recently acquired IWC Ingenieur from their Vintage collection (as shown below). Since I have a weak spot for the Ingenieur series, I tried this Vintage Collection Ingenieur a couple of times already and am very enthusiastic about it. So it is bound to happen that there will be one in my collection at some point.

Anyhows, Dimer told me that he did some research on the web about the true source of inspiration for this Vintage Collection Ingenieur. It seems like IWC is directing us towards the wrong watch in their media campaign. In their media campaign, IWC refers to their first line-up of Ingenieur watches in the mid-1950s. The IWC Ingenieur ref.666 AD from 1955 to be more precise, which shows us that at least they’re not very superstitious towards the use of certain combinations of numbers. The 1955 model is referring to, is shown below.

This fairly large time piece – for that era – of 36.5mm had this new winding system by the name of one of their directors, hublot replika, Albert Pellaton. This new winding system was especially useful for watch makers, who now could simply disconnect the automatic winding system and the barrel of the watch to do repairs on the main spring or escapement, without removing the winding system in total. Also, the Pellaton winding system used an innovative way to make the movement as shock proof as possible, by using this flexible (winding)rotor bridge. This Pellaton winding system is still present in a number of IWC watches, including the current line-up of Ingenieur models. Below, you see a close-up of the current caliber 80110 movement that has this shock proof Pellaton winding system.

In 2008, IWC introduced the Vintage Collection in order to celebrate their 140th anniversary. One of the watches in this collection was the Ingenieur as you can see in the Dimer’s excellent photograph above.

As you can see, the photograph of Dimer and the vintage IWC catalogue image above do not match that well. Although the hands, case design and ‘Ingenieur’ print on the dial remind us of the vintage model, there are quite some differences to observe. What about the hour markers and metal applied frame of the date window? The color of the dial and the pie-pan shape of the vintage model are also quite different from the new Vintage Collection Ingenieur. All-in-all, a nice source of inspiration, but one can hardly speak of a replica or proper re-edition. It’s more like the current Rolex Milgauss versus the vintage Rolex Milgauss 1019 models, to name a direct competitor of a watch with a weak iron inner case.

After strawling the web for more similar Ingenieur models from the years long gone, Dimer found this 1966 Ingenieur which is more like the new Vintage Collection Ingenieur. This model, with caliber 8531 movement that also includes the Pellaton winding system of course, is a much better fit and should have been used as IWC’s true source of inspiration for their 2008 novelty.

Although IWC made up a nice story using the wrong reference, the Ingenieur remains a terrific anti-magnetic watch. Since these Ingenieur models aren’t appreciated by the masses, you can find them fairly well and nicely priced in the 2nd hand market. In my opinion, it’s undeserved that the Ingenieur line-up is so underrated. My guess is that the design of these models aren’t as catchy as the Porugieser line-up of watches

Dimer did a similar write up in Dutch for the DeZinvanLuxe watch portal. I used his pictures and article as a source for this blog post. Please visit his article for some more pictures of vintage models and catalogues.
